The "other" Great Ocean Road.Several cliff top car parks such as Shack Bay and Eagles Nest allow you to spend more time enjoying the seaside beaches and rock platforms. Low tide is the best for exploring this stretch of coast. The Caves and Flat Rocks area close to Inverloch is well known for the Dinosaur Dreaming Fossil site. Stop and learn more about the fossils that have been discovered or try your luck at finding the dinosaur footprint.Anderson Inlet Bring the family on a visit to beautiful Anderson Inlet, a protected bay where the Tarwin River enters Bass Strait. The enclosed bay makes Anderson Inlet a protected beach, perfect for swimming with the kids, while the shallow estuary creates a stunning turquoise colour. Take a wander along the large expanse of soft sand and watch the breeze coming over the low grassy dunes. At low tide you can stroll around the western headland to reach the surfing beaches.Fishing opportunities abound. Bait your hook and cast your beach fishing rod to land some King George whiting, Australian salmon, mullet and silver trevally. Anderson Inlet is also a great recreational boating area with a boat ramp jetty.Access and accessibilityAll-terrain wheelchairs are available free of charge from the Inverloch Visitor Information Centre.Screw Creek Nature Walk An undulating scenic walk over boardwalks, salt marsh and mangroves up to a lookout on Townsend Bluff with gorgeous views over Anderson Inlet. Follow the route of George Bass' coastal discovery voyage over 200 years ago on this popular walk, stretching from the outskirts of San Remo at Punchbowl Road to the Bass Highway (just opposite the hall at Peppermint Road) in Kilcunda.The George Bass Coastal Walk now links into the Bass Coast Rail Trail so, if you've got the energy reserves, it's is possible to walk all the way from the Punch Bowl in San Remo to the centre of Wonthaggi.Distance: 7kmDuration: 2 hours one wayGrade: Level 3 - Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Time your stop-off to catch the 12pm daily pelican feeding at the San Remo pier. From San Remo, take the B420 to the Anderson roundabout. Turn right onto the B460 and follow the road past Kilcunda and its tempting general store until you reach Wonthaggi. Pause for long enough in Wonthaggi to tour the State Coal Mine to discover life underground in the 1900s.From Wonthaggi the route takes a scenic detour along the C435 to Cape Paterson and the start of the Bunurong Coastal Drive, a unique stretch of coastal road featuring sweeping ocean views and dramatic rocky outcrops. The road stretches 14 kilometres between Cape Paterson and Inverloch, your destination.Eagles Nest Eagles Nest is a large rock structure adjacent to the coastline that resembles the top half of a map of Australia. It's a stunning formation that changes colour drastically through the course of day and is a popular spot for photographers and artists alike, no two days there are ever the same. A real highlight of the Bunurong Coastal Drive and a must see on Inverloch's mini Great Ocean Road.Shack Bay Inverloch beaches include Twin Reefs, Shack Bay, Eagles Nest, The Caves, Flat Rocks, Main Surf Beach, two more surf beaches, Anderson Inlet-Western Beach, Anderson Inlet-Browns Beach, Anderson Inlet-Venus Street and Anderson Inlet-The Glades. Twin Reefs, Shack Bay and Eagles Nest make up most of the Bunurong National Marine Park (excluding The Oaks in Cape Paterson). The Caves and Flat Rocks are a part of the Bunurong Marine Park, which starts at Coal Point in Harmers Haven. A great spot for some secluded sunbathing.The Oaks The Oaks is your first stop after Cape Paterson. An off road carpark gives access to a lookout and to a coastal walking track. Gaze out over vegetated sandstone cliffs to a stretch of sandy beach between two headlands. Sand gives way to flat rocks beneath the cliffs. It is typical of the breathtaking Bass Coast. It is one of the few beaches with a sandy surf zone along this rocky section of coast. The beach lies in a 250 m wide opening in the rocks. It is backed by a small, vegetated dune, then 30 m high, vegetated bluffs and the main road. A foot track enters the middle of the beach. The beach faces south and receives waves averaging 1.6 m.The Caves The Caves is a beach with a set of pirate caves just past Eagles Nest.Twin Reefs Keep an eye out for the tourist signs, there is not much distance between stops. An off road gravel carpark give access to a lookout. From the lookout glance back toward Cape Paterson where rocky headlands reach out to the ocean. A sandy beach sits below the sandstone cliffs and at low tide, rocks beneath the water are visible. There is a walking track to the beach which is a little steep and perhaps not suitable for everyone to traverse.Offshore Surf School Great way to learn how to surf in Inverloch. Offshore Surf School offers group surfing lessons, private surfing lessons, private and group stand up paddle boarding lessons. We meet in the main surf beach carpark to the left of the lifesaving club. There’s a grassed area where the Offshore Surf School trailer will be.
